Let me first admit that I am not a disinterested observer here: I
write for “The Second Pass”; its founding editor, John Williams, is a
close friend; and the redoubtable Penguin Press has published both of
my novels. Having said all of that I would say this anyway: the
trailer for Thomas Pynchon’s “Inherent Vice” is perfect.
That it might be The Reclusive Genius himself portraying Doc only makes it better. For what,it’s worth, I’m not totally convinced it’s Pynchon, who “appeared”, with a bag over his head, as himself on The Simpsons The voice on the Simpsons has a little more New York to it, and it’s not quite as drawlingly stonerish. Then again, this is Thomas Pynchon we’re talking about. Maybe they’re both him. Maybe neither one is. (Remember the was-it wasn’t-it Lotion liner-notes.
Maybe he doesn’t have a voice. Whoever is reading does a great job, and I can’t wait to read what Pynchon does with the crime/detective form.
